In the vibrant ecosystem of Fraternity and Sorority life and student governance at Florida State University, Jack Hitchcock’s journey from a Beta Theta Pi member to Student Body President, and eventually to Chairman of the Florida Student Association, stands as a testament to the power of fraternity life in shaping future leaders. Hitchcock’s story is not just one of personal achievement but also a blueprint for how Greek life can prepare students for significant roles in student government and beyond.
From his early days at Beta Theta Pi, Hitchcock was thrust into a culture that prioritized leadership development. “My fraternity was integral for my leadership development, molding me into the man I am today,” Hitchcock recalls. Through organizing philanthropic events, leading chapter initiatives, and serving on the Executive Board, every moment was a lesson in leadership. Beta Theta Pi provided a nurturing ground for Hitchcock, teaching him the importance of teamwork, strategic thinking, and the value of a supportive community.
Hitchcock’s ambition led him to co-found ForwardFSU, a campus political party focused on Tradition, Intentionality, and Advancement, where he also served as a recruitment director. This experience was crucial in solidifying his leadership skills and understanding of campus politics. “I helped Beta Theta Pi elect over a dozen brothers to office over that time and recruited over 100 members of Greek life to run,” Hitchcock shares, highlighting his pivotal role in enhancing Greek life’s representation in student governance.
His fraternity’s support was invaluable during his run for Student Body President. The chapter’s enthusiasm and assistance, from fundraising to phone banking, played a critical role in his election victory. “The Chapter helped me fundraise, reposted my campaign material on social media, and even helped me and my team phone bank on the election day,” he notes, underscoring the fraternity’s instrumental support in his campaign.
During his tenure, Hitchcock achieved significant milestones, including hosting an Advocacy Day in DC with all ACC schools, creating the nation’s first student-led group to advance the university’s US News ranking, and negotiating an increase in SGA funding by over $1,000,000. His leadership extended beyond the university when he was elected as Chairman of the Florida Student Association, making him the sole student representative on the Florida Board of Governors.
As Hitchcock looks toward a gap year before attending law school, his journey reflects the profound impact that Greek life can have on a student’s leadership trajectory. His story exemplifies how fraternities like Beta Theta Pi not only foster personal growth and leadership skills but also actively contribute to broader societal engagement and governance.
Jack Hitchcock’s experiences illuminate the mission of the NIC’s Engage initiative, showcasing the invaluable role Greek life plays in preparing students for leadership roles in student government and public policy. His achievements are a stellar example for current and future Greek life members, illustrating the potential for fraternity and sorority life to serve as a foundation for impactful leadership and civic engagement.
